PIMECO, the small and medium size businesses association had to bear the effects of the credit squeeze. It will now be making an application to the government to request credit on approving terms to reduce the effect.

PIMECO has listed a range of ways in which the government can support small commercial units. Yesterday, PIMECO said that it has chosen this moment to make the request to the ministry for Commerce and Industry as the Balearic government is drafting its budget for the next year.

In an official publication, PIMECO has warned all of its members that over that past few months, the economic indicators of the region show that it is suffering due to the world-wide credit crunch.

Business Information – Campos

Campos until recently would not have been the place to buy a business unless you wanted a locals bar. However the town has changed over the last couple of years and now has its fair share of tourists visiting the market and the craft shops on the main street.

Its proximity to one of the main beaches on the island, Es Trenc has seen it get busier as people find out what it has to offer. Its also on the main route to the busy South East resort of Cala Dor.

Having said that if you are looking for a busy tourist based bar to buy then Campos is not the place just yet.

What we do find quite often are rural hotels for sale in the Campos area.

Please scroll down for more information on Campos

Area Information – Campos

The municipal district and small residential town of Campos, is situated almost midway between the towns of Llucmayor and Santanyí in the south east corner of the island, approximately 40km or 25 miles east of the capital Palma.

The south east corner of the island is now regarded as being the centre of the Majorcan dairy industry, and visitors to the area often comment on the large number of windmills which are again being put into use driving water supply pumps. A Majorcan specialty that is produced in the town is the “Piris” cheese, which is allowed to mature in a mixture of brine and paprika for approximately 3 months before it is ready eat.

Campos still remains primarily a residential town, and few concessions are made to the small number of tourists who do make it here. These visitors are generally independent travellers who are looking to escape the commercialism that has dominated much of the island, and who use the town as a convenient base to further explore the south east coast and in particular the unspoilt beaches of Sa Ràpita and Es Trenc.

If you’ve never visited Majorca before, the Es Trenc beach is a totally undeveloped 3km long stretch of coast, that is famed for its beautiful fine white sands, and crystal clear waters, which in recent years has become particularly popular with nudists. Behind Es Trenc a channel then leads to the Es Salobar wetlands, which is second is size only to the Parc Natural de s’Albufera on the north coast of the island between the resorts of Alcudia and Playa de Muro.

Business Information -- Cala Mondrago

Cala Mondrago is not really an area where you will find business for sale, there are a couple of bars and restaurants and occasionally they do change hands but normally very quickly, its one of those cases of knowing who to talk to.

There is the possibility of creating a rural hotel or bed and breakfast type business in or around Cala Mondrago as the area itself is very beautiful and attracts many tourists during the day, arriving by car from all over the island or by the local bus and road train service from nearby Cala Dor

Please scroll down the page for more information on Cala Mondrago.

Resort Information -- Cala Mondrago

The secluded resort of Cala Mondrago is part of the municipal district of Santanyí, approximately 8km, or 5 miles, south of the chic resort of Cala d’Or on the south eastern coast of Majorca.

If all you’ve ever seen of Majorca is the popular resorts along the south west coast of the island, you may be somewhat amazed to discover that a resort like Cala Mondrago still exists in the 21st Century, however, if you find the thought of isolation and seclusion appealing then read on.

Cala Mondrago is one of the few coastal resorts on the island, that as yet remain undiscovered by the major tour operators.

The main feature of Cala Mondrago is without a doubt the lovely sandy beach, which is flanked by two rocky headlands. However, despite the isolation of the resort, this beach can still become quite busy during summer weekends with the influx of visitors from the local inland towns around Santanyi. It’s here that you’ll also find the only shop in the town, although even this is really limited to selling a range of beach goods and souvenirs. Beyond this, you’ll have to make the trip either north to Cala D’or, or alternatively inland to Santanyi for even the most basis holiday essentials.

Despite continued pressure and an every increasing demand for both holiday and residential accommodation, it is highly unlikely that Cala Mondrago will ever grow beyond the development that we see today. In 1992 much of the area around Cala Mondrago was recognised for its extraordinary ecological value to the island, and was declared a Natural Park by the Balearic Islands Government, thus affording it special protection from future commercial development.

General Information

Cala d’Or today is a modern purpose built resort that has grown from a small traditional Mallorcan fishing village. Over the years the resort has expanded, and now covers an area of over 4km of small sandy coves and creeks. Although in all fairness this growth has for the most part been controlled, and the town still has the feeling of a small village with few, if any, high rise buildings.

The largest of these coves is called Cala Llonga, which has been developed into a large marina that effectively splits the resort in two. So, unless you are prepared for quite a long walk, or a daily ride in the tourist mini train, you may be isolated in whatever half of the town your chosen accommodation lies.

The focal point of the town centre is a pedestrian zone around the area of Cala Gran, which has a varied selection of shops, bars and restaurants, but really lacks many of the other family attractions such as water parks, mini golf etc. that many tourist expect to find in a holiday resort these days.

The beach at Cala Gran is the largest in the town, but at 40m wide and 100m deep can never really be described as being large. Near here is Cala d’Or itself, from which the resort takes its name. This is a pine fringed cove with a small but crowded beach. Sun loungers, parasols and pedaloes can be hired at both of these beaches. In addition, there is also around 8 or 9 other smaller sandy coves in the area, although these can become extremely crowded in high season.

If the beaches at Cala d’Or become too crowded or if you wish to escape from Cala d’Or for the day, many visitors take the morning bus to Es Trenc. This beautiful beach of clear blue water and golden sand, backed by pine trees and dunes, stretches for almost 5km along the wild south eastern coast of the island. There’s a small bar-restaurant here and you can hire sun umbrellas, but there are few other facilities and the beach rarely gets packed with bodies. Be warned though, Es Trenc is popular with nudists and the bodies that you do see are likely to be bare.

Public transport around all of the east coast is not good, so you may wish to consider car hire if you want to see more of the island. However, if you do have a good sense of adventure, the daily L501 bus runs into Palma several times each day, and information, along with further details, of this service can be found in pdf format on the Transunion Mallorca sl web site.

If you do have access to your own transport, and can get out of the resort, the Sunday morning market at Felanitx is recognised as being one of the best in Majorca, and is well worth a visit. This is a good place to pick up some locally made pottery, but be prepared to haggle for the best bargains. Also certainly worth a mention are the fruit and produce markets which are held at nearby Santanyi every Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

Evening entertainment here is not rowdy, and is generally hotel based, although the resort does have an increasing number of lively bars that tend to be centred around the pedestrian zone. However, all things considered, and in keeping with much of the east coast, Cala d’Or is generally a quiet low key resort that is perhaps more suited to those looking for a relaxing holiday.
