PIMECO has listed a range of ways in which the government can support small commercial units. Yesterday, PIMECO said that it has chosen this moment to make the request to the ministry for Commerce and Industry as the Balearic government is drafting its budget for the next year.

In an official publication, PIMECO has warned all of its members that over that past few months, the economic indicators of the region show that it is suffering due to the world-wide credit crunch.

The businesses association publicised its findings after interviews with around 50 of its members. It pointed out that another factor responsible for the downturn in these figures is that the all-inclusive hotel requires the clients to pay for lodging, food and drink in advance. This leaves them with little money to spend at the other restaurants of the island. It is reported that Soller is one of the worst affected regions this season.

PIMEM, the business association of Majorca said that spending lever of the customers is considerably low. Cafés, Bars and restaurants at S’Arenal, Can Pastilla and Cala Ratjada reported serious decline in the business. At Porto Cristo in Manacor district, the association has blamed the “advance” payment of the all-inclusive hotel offer for low trade conditions.

In the capital Palma, the situation is different. People come here to sight-see in spite of bad weather and hence, the tables are filled but the spokespersons of the restaurant industry say that the levels at which the customers are ready to spend have fallen by about twenty percent.

According to the information released by General Traffic Directorate, Palma yesterday, 19 of the 42 victims were of less than 30 years old and 27 of them had died in Majorca. The reports also showed that until date, 30 people were injured in road accidents and six people, indirectly involved in such accidents were hurt. The traffic department reports indicated that this year Majorca has the highest mortality rate when compared to all Balearic Islands -27 people died of which 10 were under 30. Also, Majorca has the highest number of people injured in accidents -21. Even last year, 46 of the 58 people who died on Balearic roads were killed in Majorca.

This year, in Majorca, seven people passed away in each of the months of March and May and three people in each of April and July. Only one person was reported dead during the first twenty five days of August.

Yesterday afternoon, on the Arenal road, a driver lost control and his vehicle overturned. Guardia Civil was called to this place. There were no major injuries.

Paguera also known s Peguera in the South West of Mallorca is certainly one of the busiest resorts and many bars and restaurants have the benefit of a longer season than normal.

There are a selection of bars for sale in this area including several British bars, as this area has a large concentration of German tourists and residents German themed bars are always popular.

Many of the British run bars are in the side streets off the main tourist street. Occasionally we come across larger businesses for sale on the main street, but these tend to sell quickly and it can be a matter of who not what you know.

Resort Information -- Paguera

The resort of Paguera, along with the neighbouring resorts of Palma Nova, Magaluf and Santa Ponsa, are all part of the municipal district of Calvia on the south west coast of Majorca.

Paguera is often unkindly referred to as “Little Germany” by many of the English speaking residents on the south coast. But in all fairness, the resort is very popular with the German tourist who do make up the vast majority of visitors here, many of which are attracted by the small network of coastal hiking routes towards the back of the resort.

The resort offers visitors a choice of 3 beaches, called “Playa Palmira”, “Playa Tora” and “Playa La Romana”, which are all joined by a fairly new pedestrian promenade. During the summer months all 3 beaches can become very busy, although in all fairness to the local council, they are usually kept very clean.

Behind the promenade there’s a long shopping street running the length of the resort, where most of the restaurants and bars seem to be concentrated. Despite the majority of visitors to Paguera being German, there is also a small number of British owned bars and restaurants along this street, which we’ll cover in more detail on our Restaurants and Bars pages.

Before the growth of the tourist industry on the island during the 1960′s, Paguera was originally a tiny fishing village, however, the last 40 years has seen it develop and grow, into a popular modern tourist resort with plenty of restaurants and facilities.

Whilst not quite in the same league as the neighbouring resorts of Palma Nova and Magaluf, Paguera is certainly not the resort for those seeking peace and quiet. If this is what you are looking for along the south coast, then perhaps the nearby resort Camp de Mar may be more suitable. Although in all fairness, from the end of October onwards, when most of the families leave the island, many of the hotels do close until Easter of the following year, and the few visitors that do remain see a completely different side of Paguera.

Most of the hotels in the town are found towards the back on the resort in quite a hilly area. Whilst this affords most visitors a good view back over the town, it does make Paguera particularly unsuitable for those with mobility problems, or families with young children in pushchairs.

One particular problem we did encountered in the town, was the sheer volume of traffic and the limited parking spaces available. In recent times this has been eased slightly with the construction of a bypass, which does take some through traffic away from the town, but nevertheless, there still appears to be a constant game of “musical chairs” going on, competing for the few parking spaces that are available.

All things considered Paguera gives the impression as being a busy, lively resort that always has something going on. Somewhat of a German “oasis” amongst the other Brit dominated south coast resorts.
