The State Tourism Department secretary Joan Mesquida and the director of Turespaña, Antonio Bernabé had attended the crisis committee meeting yesterday. The meeting was held by Miguel Sebastian, Minister for Tourism and Commerce, in which, a plan to attract international more tourists during the autumn-winter season was discussed. The ministry

After the meeting, ministry resources said that in spite of bad economic conditions all over the world, the tourism industry of Spain is doing well. They said that, in general, the number of people visiting Spain had remained stable during the last 7 months showing a slight decline of 0.2%. The ministry assumed that the Spanish tourism industry had been very resilient despite the unfavourable conditions. A research conducted by the National Institute of Statistics indicated that in July, overnight stays by foreign visitors all over the country had increased by 2.9 percent. The research also showed that The Balearics had the highest hotel occupation for July with it being 86.95 % of the total capacity.

In July, 9’176’866 visitors stayed overnight in the Balearics’ hotels – 1,388,557 foreign visitors and 234,233 Spaniards. However, the hotel prices have increased the most in Aragon and Balearics, when compared to last year.

The government Spain is planning to launch its Tourism Overhaul Plan for the year 2020. This will include renovating old and established tourist destinations that are wearing down. This will also be advantageous to the different sectors of industry, other than tourism.

There are always a choice of bars for sale and businesses for sale in Santa Ponsa, the concentration of business in this area always ensures that. The summer season is normally very busy with the chance of some Winter trade as there are many ex pats living in the area year round.

There are many Irish bars, karaoke bars, themed bars restaurants and late night music bars around the Santa Ponsa area and it is known as a resort where good success can be achieved with the right business.

Please scroll down the page for more resort information.

Resort Information -- Santa Ponsa

The very popular holiday resort of Santa Ponsa, along with its more infamous neighbours Palma Nova and Magaluf, are all part of the municipal district of Calvia on the south west coast of Majorca approximately 20km, or 12 miles west of the capital Palma.

Unlike the nearby “Brit” resorts of Palma Nova and Magaluf which are 5km away to the east, Santa Ponsa has developed a very strong Celtic theme and has become very popular with both Irish and Scottish visitors. In response to this market, a large number of both Irish and Scottish themed bars and restaurant have in recent years opened in the town.

The main beach is reasonably large, and in recent years it has been extended with imported sand to accommodate an increasing number of visitors to the resort. Even so, in high season it can still become very crowded due to its popularity with both tourists and locals alike. If you wish to escape from the crowds, there is a smaller secondary beach set in its own sheltered cove about 15 minutes walk away which can be reached from the Avda. Rei Jaume I. Both beaches have the usual facilities expected of a modern resort, along with a good variety of water sports equipment available for hire. Swimming in the bay is generally quite safe with no strong currents, and fairly shallow waters, however, care must always be exerted when the flag system is in operation.

Regular boat trips along the south west coast operate from both the main beach and marina at Santa Ponsa, and at around £10 per head represent excellent value for money. The boats are all quite modern, with both a small bar and toilet facilities onboard. On most trips the captain will usually stop for about 30 minutes giving you the chance to dive or jump off the back of the boat and cool off in the sea.

Santa Ponsa has quite a wide selection of cafes, bars and restaurants and excellent facilities for visitors on self catering arrangements. In response to the strong UK and Irish influences in the town, many supermarkets now also stock readily recognisable UK branded goods, although in many cases the prices charged may be considerably higher than those you would expect to pay at home. Although the underlying principle of consumer choice was once explained to me by a local shopkeeper as, “if you don’t like the price, you don’t have to buy”.

The resort really come alive in the early evening, but is never in the same league of its neighbours Palma Nova and Magaluf. Although, from the size of our Restaurants and Bars pages, you will quickly realise that Santa Ponsa has an abundance of bars, restaurants, and live music venues, catering for families with children.

All things considered, the town is cheerful, easy going and is essentially a family resort, although little now remains of the original village that was Santa Ponsa before the onset of mass tourism in the early 1960′s.

The resort of Porto Colom in the South East of Mallorca normally has a selection of bars and restaurants for sale. These are to be found in the central square or in the adjoining beach area of Cala Marsal.

The trade in this area is mainly UK and German with a good level of resident ex pats giving a small possibility of a Winter trade.

There has been a downturn of UK visitors to Porto Colom in recent years but this looks set to improve with a major UK tour operator coming back to the area.

There can be some bargain priced bars and restaurants around here if you know where to look and who to ask.

Resort Information -- Porto Colom

The resort of Porto Colom is the principle coastal development of the municipal district of Felanitx, on the southern half of the east coast of Majorca. Although as the crow flies the resort is only around 65km, or 40 miles east of Palma and the Son Sant Joan International airport, it has to be said that the road over to the east coast is not particularly good, and it is not unusual for the transfer to take approximately 1.1/2 to 2 hours from the time you actually leave the airport grounds.

The municipality as a whole covers an area of around 170 km2, and along with the administrative town of Felanitx encompasses a handful of picturesque inland villages, and the two other coastal resorts of Cala Ferrera and Cala Serena.

The name of “Felanitx” originates from the Latin word “fenalicius”, which roughly translates into English as “a place where fenas grows”, although records show that the first signs of human settlement in the area actually took place over 2000 years before the birth of Christ.

Porto Colom is the site of one of the most important, and best preserved, “Naveta” or prehistoric burial sites on Majorca, and for this reason in 1996 the Department of Prehistory of the University of the Balearic Islands established the archaeology project known as “Projecte Closos of Can Gaià”, in an attempt to further understand the ancient civilisations of the island.

Porto Colom still remains a small traditional fishing village, that has so far resisted full scale tourist commercialisation. A small amount of mainly residential building work is going on, although the town will never become another Magaluf or Palma Nova.

The main feature of the town is the large natural harbour, which is the home to a number of small fishing boats and an ever increasing number of leisure craft. From the harbour looking inland on a clear day, it’s also possible to see the Sanctuary of Sant Salvador in the distance.

Around the harbour area there is a fair selection of shops for the everyday holiday essentials, along with more souvenir shops behind the beach at Cala Marcal, and it is here to a large extent, that most of the tourist development has taken place. The town has two reasonably sized supermarkets the first “Ca’s Corso”, is next to the Ca’s Corso Apartments and the other Spar is situated by the side the harbour next to the Club Nautico offices. Both offer a good selection of fresh and cooked meats, wines and spirits, fresh fruit and vegetables, along with Mallorquin specialities and British branded products. But don’t expect too much competition with their prices, as they are both owned by the same people.

The resort is very popular with British visitors who aren’t looking for mass commercialisation in a resort, such as water parks and countless karaoke bars, many of which who have subsequently fallen in love with the resort and bought second homes in the area.

Holiday accommodation here mostly falls within the 3 or 4 star standard, which is then supplemented with a fair selection of good value self catering apartments to choose from.

Business Information -- Cala Mandia

The resort of Cala Mandia has a selection of bars and restaurants for sale and to rent. Business can be good in the height of summer, there are two major hotels and several smaller ones in the area, this is supplemented by an ever increasing amount of new build apartments and villas on the edge of the resort. The mix of tourists is predominantly German, although there are an increasing number of Scandinavian and British. There is very little or no winter trade to be had in Cala Mandia although one of the hotels in the area does open earlier than most.

Resort Information -- Cala Mandia

If you’ve never heard of the resort of Cala Mandia before, you can be certainly be excused, since most of the maps of the island don’t as yet recognise this as being a resort in its own right. However, if you look closely enough you may see a reference to the development of Porto Cristo Novo, some 4km to the south of Porto Cristo on the east coast of the island. If only to add further confusion, a number of the tour operators are also marketing this destination as Playa Romantica, which literally translates into English as “Romantic Beach.”

In any case, this fairly remote area of the east coast, is part of the municipal district of Manacor around 70km to the east of the capital Palma, and generally visitors should normally expect a transfer time of around 1.1/2 to 2 hours from leaving the airport grounds.

Cala Mandia, Playa Romantica, or Porto Cristo Novo, which ever way you wish to refer to it, is still a relatively new resort destination that has been specifically developed to meet the ever increasing demand for tourist accommodation on the island.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c1iRWJki6E

If you’ve ever visited Majorca before, you may recognise that the town of Porto Cristo is synonymous with two of the biggest tourist attractions on Majorca, namely the Caves of Drac and Caves of Hams. As a result of this close proximity, Porto Cristo can sometimes become very busy during the summer months with coaches of day visitors. To a large extend Cala Mandia escapes this attention of the general public, and the only day visitors to the town are normally those looking for a relaxing day on the beach.

All things considered, it’s a very quiet resort, perfect if you want to retreat and get away from it all, but still within easy reach of the more lively resort of Cala Millor which is only a short taxi ride away.

Well what Brit does not know of Magaluf?

It’s the main British resort on the island and has been for many years.

There are many British bars and restaurants in Magaluf to choose from but the trick is to look very carefully at what you are considering buying. Some work, some don’t, some could if you changed the theme or the way they operate. Remember the best and busiest bars in Magaluf rarely come on the open market for obvious reasons. That being said, there are still many businesses that are for sale where you can make a decent living. As with all areas in Majorca, its all about buying right.

Thousands of hotel beds full every night of the summer, but the tourists have many bars and restaurants to choose from. The capital of Stag and Hen parties with a winter trade as well.

Please scroll down for more information on Magaluf.

Resort Information -- Magaluf

Magaluf is Mallorca’s original pie and a pint resort. It was the flagship resort for promoting Mallorca to the world as a destination for cheap package holidays. Today it remains one of Spain’s top mass tourism destinations and it competes with Benidorm and Ibiza as one of the best places to go in summer for nightlife. Magaluf clubs are well known by clubbers throughout Europe and some of the top DJs from the UK turn up here for short stints during the peak season. If you prefer to get to bed before sunrise Magaluf still has plenty to offer you and is very popular for family holidays and with retired people.

To the east the resort begins where Palma Nova ends at the headland of Torrenova. Every single street is packed with bars, restaurants, cafés and shops making specific recommendations very difficult considering the speed at which establishments change hands from one year to the next. In general you’ll have no problem finding plenty cheap food and drink and you might be pleasantly surprised at the good quality of meals in a lot of the restaurants.

Magaluf beach is magnificent with its glorious sand and fine, clear water. There are small kiosk bars set up along the beach during the peak summer playing great music. To the east of the beach the British pub/restaurant The Boatyard (“Geordie owned and run … we also speak English”) is a fine place for a pint and traditional British bar meals. To the west the Nawab Indian restaurant around the corner from Lineker’s has a great terrace overlooking the beach whilst Tom Brown’s and Happy House do a roaring trade in British food.

The Restaurante Las Palmeras at the end of Avinguda de Magaluf is a nice spot for Spanish meat and fish dishes. The Britannia pub just opposite is a long established favourite amongst holidaymakers. From here along Avinguda de l’Olivera there are more long term favourites for family entertainment including Jokers and Benny Hills. The BCM disco is here and just opposite is Morgans pub/restaurant and Mrs Doyles Irish pub which is the best Irish pub in town with fine live fiddle music every night.

You’ll find plenty theme parks around Magaluf to fill your time. Favourites include Marineland which is just 4km east at Portals Nous and the waterparks of Aqualand and Western Park which are just on the main road heading west out of Magaluf. For a brilliant evening of entertainment for all the family you must go to the Pirates Adventure show.

There’s plenty to keep you amused for in and around Magaluf, however, if you do decide to rent a car you’ll be richly rewarded. Just west of the resort are some fabulous beaches such as Portals Vells. Further afield you can head over to the quaint beachside hamlet of Sant Elm on the island’s south west tip overlooking the island of Dragonera for a paella lunch at one of the beachside cafés. Or drive up to Sollersouth west coast to discover the real beauty of this magnificent island.

General Information

The modern resort of Cala Millor (which translates into English as “the better bay”) is on the islands rugged east coast, and is separated from its more quiet and traditional neighbour Cala Bona (“the good bay”) by a small rocky headland. The resort is without doubt the largest tourist development along the east coast, and is jointly administered as part of the municipal districts of Son Servera and Sant Llorenç des Cardassar.

The first person to see the potential of Cala Millor as a tourist destination was Jaume Vicens Andreu, who in 1933 built the Hotel Eureka, which is now officially recognised as being the first hotel in the town. In the 60 years that followed the opening of the Hotel Eureka, controlled development saw Cala Millor grow to accommodate over 16,000 tourist beds in approximately 61 hotels and 65 self catering apartments.

Most of Majorca’s east coast is dotted with tiny creeks and coves, however, the beach at Cala Millor stretches for more than 6km along a wide sheltered bay which is protected by two large unspoilt headlands, which we’ll cover in more detail on the Attractions page. The beach here is considered by many to be one of the best on the island, with clear water and gently sloping sands. Parasols and sun beds can be hired at various points along its length, along with the usual selection water sports activities, including a windsurfing school.

The resort has a good selection of shops, but in all fairness to the town, they do tend to lack any great variety in the range of products they each stock. If you do venture beyond your sun bed, local markets are held every Friday in nearby Son Servera, further a field to the north in Arta on a Tuesday, and 20km inland at Manacor every Monday. For those of you who have been to the island before you would recognise that Manacor is also the home of the Mallorcan Pearl industry.

The nearby resort of Cala Bona, which effectively is now almost becoming part of the Cala Millor development, can be easily reached by a walk along the new promenade to the north, and for the more adventurous the resorts of Sa Coma and S’Illot are a further 3km beyond the Punta de n’Amer headland to the south.

Of the 4 resorts along this short stretch of coast, Cala Millor is without doubt the more lively and has a wide selection of bars and discos providing evening entertainment to supplement that provided by the hotels. Although Cala Millor has a quite a wide appeal, it is still perhaps more suited towards the traditional family holiday than those 18 to 30′s who are possibly looking for all night clubs and karaoke bars.

Business Information

There are a wide variety of bars, restaurants, shops and cafes always on the market for sale in Cala Millor. Mainly due to the fact that there are so many around this resort area. There are many British owned bars, many of which stay open all season.

There is more opportunity to to open all year in Cala Millor as many of the hotels stay open for longer than in other East coast resorts.

Prime beach front locations are generally more expensive but there are bargains to be had in the side streets leading to the promenade.
