More than 145 passengers were killed yesterday when a Spanish plane taking tourists and visitors to Canary Islands crashed. This incident occurred at Madrid airport near Terminal Four. Huge amount of smoke was noticed from the debris of JK5022 which was a MD-82 jet and its destination was Las Palmas, Canary Islands. Police had blocked both ends of Terminal Four runway and more than twenty ambulances and a number of fire engines were stationed there.
The plane was flying with 166 passengers and 9 members of the crew. It was seen shooting off the runway at around 2:45 pm. A huge explosion was described by the witnesses. Herbigio Corral, the person in charge of the rescue team, told that only the tail of the flight was recognizable and there were ruins all over and also that the dead bodies were scattered across the area. Only 28 people had survived in this accident. Eight of them are in serious condition.
Magdalena Alvarez, Development Minister, said that the cause of this accident might be a faulty take off while the Spanish media had quoted that the left engine of the plane, manufactured by Pratt & Whitney, caught fire. The reports say that the plane was delayed and it had left late. The passengers included Germans, Swedes and Dutch people.
