The Railway Museum at Soller will exhibit the designs of Joan Miró, a Catalan born artist and sculptor of 20h century, on sailcloth, today. It will be conducted along with a photo exhibition in memory of his works and life.
During the nineteen seventies, Mallorca had a great influence on Mirós work and a nearly decade later, many iconic designs were selected personally by him to prepare 6 sail cloth cuttings with the intention to promote Palma. Transferring these designs onto the sailcloth was done by poster and cinematography experts.
Miró worked in Majorca for about thirty years but the Island’s first impressions had fascinated him when he came to Soller for summer holidays when he was a child.
the town will officially declare Miró “an adoptive son” on Saturday. Lot of activities are organized in honour of his life and his work. And therefore, after 26 years of the creation of those six sails, two of them will be exhibited at the railway museum, Soller permanently. In 1982, the sails were first displayed at Vienna but they had to be restored after their discovery, after which they were stored in municipal warehouses for years.
The opening of this exhibition will be coinciding with the presentation of “Moments de Miró” at the Soller Port. A statue dedicated to late Javier Mayol will be unveiled. Javier Mayol was once the president of Soller railway and passed away in a road mishap this year.
It is hoped that this exhibition will bring many visitors to Soller and benefit the bars, restaurants and other businesses in the area.
