Guardia Civil are investigating the murder of Laura Gallego, 28, mother of a 2-year old son, at a converted lockup garage in Marratxi that she shared with Hermenegildo Fernandez Salva, her 31-year-old boyfriend.
They suspect Salva for the murder. He is a known crack addict having a criminal record and is presently being held in Palma prison. Yesterday, the central government delegate Ramon Socias said that the investigation indicates Salva as the killer, in spite of his initial claims, of which many were contradictory.
Salva was the one to guide the police to the body of Laura on Saturday night. He told them that she had suffered a bike accident at Son Banya shanty where they went to buy drugs. But, the autopsy showed that she was brutally bludgeoned to death 12 hours before Salva informed the police.
The police suspect that they had started quarrelling over a drug-related issue but when the situation went out of hand, he became extremely violent and battered her to death. Yesterday the Balearic government held a minute’s silence in her memory and to express disapproval of domestic violence at the government headquarters at Palma.
Although this was the first case of death due to domestic violence in the Balearics this year, the death toll across Spain rose to 42 yesterday. On an average, the number of women killed by their partners is 1.5 every week.
