This year, 42 people died so far in road accidents in the Balearics. This number is 16 less than that of last year. In 2007, the number was 58, which means that the death rate in road accidents has gone down by 27.5 percent.
According to the information released by General Traffic Directorate, Palma yesterday, 19 of the 42 victims were of less than 30 years old and 27 of them had died in Majorca. The reports also showed that until date, 30 people were injured in road accidents and six people, indirectly involved in such accidents were hurt. The traffic department reports indicated that this year Majorca has the highest mortality rate when compared to all Balearic Islands -27 people died of which 10 were under 30. Also, Majorca has the highest number of people injured in accidents -21. Even last year, 46 of the 58 people who died on Balearic roads were killed in Majorca.
This year, in Majorca, seven people passed away in each of the months of March and May and three people in each of April and July. Only one person was reported dead during the first twenty five days of August.
Yesterday afternoon, on the Arenal road, a driver lost control and his vehicle overturned. Guardia Civil was called to this place. There were no major injuries.
