Yesterday, in Palma, Joana Barcelo, who was recently appointed as the minister of Employment and Training, said that in lieu of the present economic downturn, her main task would be to find ways of introducing a new employment drives in the Balearics. Barcelo, had left the post of the leader of Council of Minorca before taking up this post, replacing the pervious Employment and Training minister, Margarita Najera. Yesterday, she was sworn in at the government head offices. She thanked President Francesc Antich and praised Najera at the ceremony.
She said that the main problems that she will have to tackle first are solving unemployment issue and introducing new training schemes in order to meet the new job demands. She said that training and work form one of the main parts of a society and she would try to give her best to the challenge that lies ahead. She said that this needs the cooperation of all the members of the government, but not just her party. She also said that various agreements will have to be made with unions, business associations and social and professional institutions. She concluded saying that it was a pleasure and an honour to be at peoples’ service.
President Francesc Antich said that it had been a very positive and happy change of position. Najera will now be leading a central government project, aimed at reforming the Playa de Palma, which is a part of the national programme to upgrade tourist zones which have eroded over the years.
