Let’s be honest, what many people come to Mallorca for is the weather and the beaches, so when you are cultured out and you can fiesta no more then here is a Beach Guide for you.

Whatever entertainment you choose, however you spend you day and night. There is something for everyone here in Mallorca and wont it just be amazing to know that when your day is done then you will be returning to your own home, your own piece of the Mediterranean Island of dreams, that is Mallorca.

All of your UK appliances will work here in Mallorca but you will need to change the plug to our two pin type or buy a supply of adaptors. The voltage here is 230 volts so no need to change voltage on any appliances.

GAS
The majority of gas here is Mallorca is bottled gas, its called Butano and you will see the orange gas bottles around. Its similar to Calor Gas in the UK and has to be fitted with a regulator and pipe for connection to cookers, heaters etc. Refills are available from some hardware stores and there is normally a weekly delivery to your door by the registered Butano stockist in the area.

You can only get a new bottle without exchanging it for an empty from the registered stockist and you will have to complete a contract form. Once you have your bottle you are able to swap an empty for a full at the hardware store

WATER
“The water in Majorca don’t taste like what it oughta” still stands! It is not advisable to drink tap water here unless it’s been boiled. Bottled water is in plentiful supply and is quite inexpensive.

In your business and accommodation you will normally pay for water as you use it by a metre system. It’s not expensive.
If you live outside a town then you may find that your water originates from a well. This doesn’t mean you have to lower a bucket down a hole to get your water, it will normally be automatically bought into the house by a pump and there is no charge if you use your own well water.

RUBBISH
Refuse collection over here is generally made every day! Well to be truthful its collected at night. You will have to take your rubbish to one of the many refuse collection points, you will see the large wheelie type bins at many street corners. These are then emptied nightly.

There is a yearly charge for rubbish collection but its sometimes included in your rent and it is usually no more than a couple of hundred Euros per year.

Recycling is taking off here and you will see various recycling bins for glass, plastic and paper at most larger rubbish collection points.

Installing a new line can take a few weeks…..it’s Mallorca time. You will get used to it.

Dialling the UK from Mallorca is simply a matter of dialling 0044 and omitting the first 0 from the UK number. This is the same if you are dialling from a landline or a mobile.

There are several packages available from Telefonica, to include National calls and internet access.

ADSL is the usually term for broadband internet access and the standard download speed is currently 3mb.

Currently the model of telephone that comes with your telephone line is called Domo and although it has lots of features the instruction manual is in Spanish, so unless you can read Spanish you won’t understand it.

To get a line installed or to take over an existing telephone service Telefonica will need your Spanish bank account details.

MOBILE PHONES
Your UK mobile should work in Majorca, but if you are using a UK number then the cost will be quite high.

It’s best to get either a Spanish SIM card for your phone or buy a new phone here.

A SIM card currently costs around 25 Euros and you will get some credit included with this. A pay as you go phone including a SIM card will start from around 30 Euros.
You can credit your phone at most supermarkets, cash points and a variety of other shops.

As a business owner it would be advisable to have a mobile phone contract as then 50% of the cost of your calls should be able to be claimed back through your business accounts and will be offset against your profit.
To set this up you will need, your NIE number, Passport and bank details.

There is a choice of mobile phone networks in Mallorca. Movistar, which is owned by Telefonica, Vodafone and Orange.

Signal coverage is not always good in some remote areas and its best to check which network gives you the best coverage in the area you are planning to live.

TELEVISION
Spanish TV is not everyones idea of great entertainment especially when you cant understand a word of it.

Legally you are not supposed to receive SKY TV anywhere outside the UK but as long as you have an address or family address in the UK where you can receive the card and occasional letter then you should be OK.

You do need a larger dish over here, the minimum is 120cm and you will lose some channels at certain times of the day, larger dishes are available to reduce the signal loss.

There are several companies over here that can help you with a SKY dish, box and even subscription if required.

What you will probably notice is that the car drivers over here love overtaking and are not sure what to do with roundabouts! So take care with both.

Initially you will be able to drive over here on your full, EU type licence, however its advisable to obtain a Spanish one within the first year. Don’t worry it does not involve taking a further test.

Drink drive laws in Mallorca are stricter than the UK, and the alcohol limit is lower. In the past you hardly ever saw random Police check points for drink driving but now they are more common place. A small amount over the limit will get you a fine and points while being substantially over can result in a prison sentence, so take it easy.

You can drive a motor bike or scooter up to 125cc in Mallorca on your full UK driving licence with no test required. The age limit for up to a 50cc moped is 14.
You will also see many “micro cars” here which have a restricted speed and can be driven with no licence. You will notice them as they invariably have a line of cars trying to over take them.

The speed limit is usually clearly marked with the maximum speed on dual carriageways being 120 kph.

By law you must carry in your car a spare set of light bulbs, two warning triangles and a fluorescent Hi-vis jacket.

You should also carry registration documents as well as some form of identification.

It really is advisable to purchase a Spanish licensed car over here, you can of course bring your own car from the UK but remember that the steering wheel will be on the other side and may make it harder for you for driving. You may also be asked to change you number plate to a Spanish one and have the vehicle retested for Spanish regulations.

If you have older children already in GCSE, you may choose one from the many private British schools here that use the very same syllabus used in the UK or choose to integrate them into a Spanish school.

Importantly, the levels of passing and entrance to university are above the national UK average.

LANGUAGE
Although Spanish is widely spoken in Mallorca the national language is Mallorquin, a dialect of Catalan and is not very similar to Castellano Spanish which is the main language of Mainland Spain. However, Spanish is understood by everyone so if you have been practising your Uno, Dos, Tres and Cerveza por favor, don’t worry it will be understood.

The majority of your suppliers and, in fact, most people involved in the tourist side of business will speak English to some degree.

It really is worth learning some Spanish, its appreciated by the locals. Normally a local school will hold Spanish lessons for English speaking residents.

SOCIAL SECURITY SYSTEM
It is mandatory for everyone owning a business in Mallorca to contribute to the Social Security system. As a self employed business owner (Autonomo) the approximate cost is 240 Euros per month.

If you employ staff on contracts then you will also be responsible for their Social Security payments as well. The amount varies depending on the type of contract they are on. This will be handled by your Gestoria.

HEALTH SERVICES
The Spanish National Health Service is very good and is free for foreign residents, the business owners and to their families who pay into the social security system.

There are also many private health care schemes, as in the UK, and the cost of these varies according to age.

Pharmacies here in Mallorca tend to be used more than the Doctor’s, there is no prescription charge and you pay for medication as you need it. The cost is minimal compared to charges in the UK. Most prescription drugs in the UK are available over the counter from a pharmacy in Mallorca.

Dentists in Majorca are always private but the cost of the treatment is normally a lot cheaper than the UK. Most Dentists have the most modern treatments available and can offer dental payment plans.

Opticians again are all private but the cost of glasses and contact lenses is a fraction of the cost of the same style in the UK. The testing equipment is normally more advanced than the UK High Street opticians.
