Yesterday, in Artà, The Mallorca Green Party and Verds Esquerra’s United Left coalition raised a protest against the high levels of damage inflicted upon Es Canons, which is a protected area of natural interest, by a lot of vehicles visiting this area.
The Greens said that they had sent repeated complaints regarding this issue to the Alliance of Socialist and Union Mallorquina but they did not respond and hence, they decided to bypass town hall and approach the Environmental Department of the Government. Verds Esquerra representative Guillem Caldentey advocated the need for effective and permanent measures to be taken to limit the number of automobiles in such protected natural areas. The party also mentioned that during few years in the past, large number of vehicles in this area has damaged the roads near Es Canons. They also mentioned that the lack of proper parking facilities in the area has lead to vehicles being parked near the rocks, damaging the plants nearby.
A similar protest on the same issue was carried out in 2005 by Es Garballó, a defence organization in Colonia de Sant Pere. They had mentiooned that the only solution this problem of erosion is to stop access for unauthorised vehicles into the protected areas.
