Palma’s Town planning department, yesterday, gave the approval to a ruling including a ban on the mobile phone antennas erected at a distance of 200meters or less from educational institutions. Mayor Aina Calvo informed yesterday that this move is realistic and responsible. She also said that this has been carried out in the best way possible to maintain the legality of antennas in the city. This ruling has to go through a plenary session for approval by the Palma Town Council but, essentially it has been approved. In all, 330 antennas exist in Palma. Only 175 of them have correct licence, 129 of them are operating illegally and 25 of them have not made the applications yet. Ylanda Garvi, the Town planning deputy assured that those antennas which fail to acquire permissions will be shut down.
Calvo said that since June1 last year, 16 of the antennas have been closed down, most of them because they do not have correct operating license. She said that these figures are high because during the Partido Popular government’s term in office, only one of the antennas was shut down. She also said that to know the exact location of any mobile antenna in Palma Mallorca, people can visit the official website of the Palma Majorca City Council, www.palmademallorca.es. Mobile antennas have caused a great concern among the people of Majorca due to the alleged health risks.
