The Sa Nostra banking foundation’s Economic and Social report of the people living in the Balearics for the year 2007 to be released next week suggests that the more amount of wastage is produced in the Balearic Islands than any region in Spain. A group led by Antoni Riera found out that each person on the Islands produces 730.1 kg of waste per year. They suggest that such large volumes of garbage produced may be due to some social conditions of the Balearics such as tourist affluence and demographic movements of immigrants.
Riera said that the rise in the volume of waste material accumulated was much more last year than that of this year. This year, in comparison with 2007, the rise in the garbage accumulated is 3.4 percent, where as last year, the rise in garbage accumulated comparison with 2006 was 13.5 percent. Though the increase in the garbage volumes might seem to be reducing, the report says that during this decade, the accumulated growth has reached 40.6%. It is also important to note that, four decades ago, the waste produced by each person on an average was 600 grammes but now, it has come up to two kilos.
