Finally, the waterfront section of Old Wharf at the Port of Pollensa will be changed into a pedestrians-only area in between calle Elcano and Avenida de Paris. Francisca Ramon, the Wharf director declared this last week after having a fraught meeting the previous evening with nearly 100 local residents and businessmen of that area.
The signposts which were erected a month ago at the streets all along the Wharf will be removed during the coming week. The signposts had been erected when it was thought that the traffic would not be allowed to enter the seafront area during day-time. Then, new signposts will be put up indicating the pedestrianisation of that area. The only vehicles that will be allowed to enter will be the local buses.
Protests from some of the neighbours at that meeting made the Town Council think about their strategy once again and to establish a pilot scheme in the commercial areas near the Old Wharf. Town Council has assured local residents that this move is being made to seek funds which would be used for an overhaul and the upgrading of the waterfront which may lead to further pedestrianisation.
Although the pilot scheme actually includessome metres more of road, the Town Council had decided to allow the vehicles until calle Elcano so that they will be able to use the public parking space at the Old Wharf.
One more large-scale project is being drafted which is to lift the seafront road up. The road runs alongside the Bay of Pollensa. Now, since the new bypass road is running, there are plans being made to establish link roads to the beach to divert all the traffic round that port.
