Son Dureta hospital, Palma has 7 foreign doctors as full-time employees and it has 37 foreign doctors on standby. Among the hospitals having the lowest number of doctors from the overseas are primary care centres, Minorca with 5 foreign doctors and public health management at Gesma, Majorca with 2 foreign doctors.
The latest data made available by COMIB, the official Balearic College of Doctors, shows that in 2007, 4,374 medical professionals are working on the islands. Of them, 576 are foreign doctors; they amount to 13.17 of the total number of doctors. As a result of increasing demand for foreign doctors and the dearth in medical professionals, doctors from around 41 different countries are practicing medicine on the islands. Of the foreign doctors in the Balearics, 2.74% are Argentineans, 3.09% are German, 2.40% are Cuban and 1.07% are Italian. This data reveals that 40% of the foreign doctors are in the public health sector while the rest are into the private health sectors.
